about

Originally written by Paul McCartney, performed by The Beatles.

Originally I was recording "Blackbird" in an utterly different way, and I still have that version, half-finished and totally not working.

This cut, on the other hand, I recorded in the hanging-out-chatting time after the boys in the band wrapped on another song -- this little ditty sprang up on a whim, without rehearsal, in just a few takes. It came about spontaneously and was accomplished within an hour, in one of those magical musical sessions one is sometimes privileged to be a part of.

I realize changing the meter of a Beatles song is gimmicky, but we were doing it in the spirit of good fun, like working out a puzzle, and in total sincerity -- I think that comes through, and I think it's worth sharing with you guys. Hope you enjoy this little unplanned cover song.

Marian Call Alaska

Marian Call has things to say. She sounds a little like Ingrid Michaelson meets They Might Be Giants & Regina Spektor for bourbon & laughs, which sounds improbable, but give it a try. She hails from Alaska and tours North America and Europe, and she lives on Twitter. Her songs are quirky, sharp, surprising confections in every genre full of rich dark carmelized sugar, savor, & spice. ... more
